Van Loggerenberg L*tter Cinsaut 2025 is not your typical light, smashable Cinsaut. This is old-vine Cinsaut treated as seriously as great Cabernet, Syrah or Pinot Noir and the result is one of the most compelling expressions of the variety in South Africa. Made by Lukas van Loggerenberg, L*tter comes from an extraordinary Franschhoek vineyard planted in 1932 by Koos L*tter.
It is regarded as the second-oldest red wine vineyard still producing in South Africa, with dry-farmed bush vines rooted in decomposed granite, sandstone and schist. The vineyard is tiny, old and naturally low yielding. Rather than trying to turn that precious fruit into something overtly powerful, Lukas takes a more restrained approach.
The 2025 was fermented 100% whole bunch with indigenous yeasts and matured for 10 months in third-fill 500-litre French oak barrels. The result is Cinsaut with perfume and delicacy, but also genuine concentration, structure and the sort of tannin normally associated with much more muscular varieties.
Tasting Notes Colour: Bright ruby to crimson red with a beautifully translucent appearance. Nose: Cranberry, fresh cherry and plum are joined by floral perfume, fresh herbs and a subtle menthol character. With air, darker florals, spice and savoury notes begin to emerge. Palate: Concentrated but remarkably precise.
Fresh red berries, sour cherry and cranberry meet lively acidity and a serious tannin structure. Those tannins are fine and tightly knit rather than heavy, giving the wine an almost Nebbiolo-like combination of perfume, delicacy and grip. Finish: Long, dry and savoury, with lingering red fruit, herbs, floral notes and finely grippy tannins.
